In 2022, we halted our daily lives and came together for a symposium on collaborative creative work around coexistence. Using dialogue and art supplies, we set out to explore the meaning of the word “place.” Guest artist Alisher Nazirov from Uzbekistan presented his path — an art form passed down in his family from generation to generation, moving between personal tradition and broader culture. He offered a glimpse into a different landscape, one in which collective memory and personal expression are deeply interwoven.

The title of the exhibition, “What makes a Place,” seeks to broaden the question that has guided us since that symposium and that continues to resonate today. The word “place” is neither fixed nor unambiguous; each time anew, it opens up spaces for interpretations, memories and feelings. What is a personal place; What is a cultural place; What does “place” mean in times of upheaval?
